What Colour is the ignition wire car stereo? ›

If the vehicle you are working on had a radio, the existing “ignition” wire in the radio wiring harness will probably be red. This is the easiest way to get an “ignition” wire. In an older vehicle, you can tap into the red wire of cigarette lighter.

Set your multimeter to the appropriate scale, connect the ground lead to a known good ground, and touch the other lead to each wire in the speaker wire. When you find one that shows approximately 12V, you have found the constant 12V wire, also known as the memory wire. It's yellow in most aftermarket head units.

The power wire coming from the stereo is usually red, and likely will connect to a red wire from the car. The ground wire for the stereo will be black, as will its corresponding wire from the car. If there is no ground wire, you can secure the ground cable to bare metal in the body of the car to serve as a ground.
